Lab 9

1) What did you learn this week?

This week in lab, we began discussing Charles Darwin's evolution and natural selection. To do this, we conducted a simulation with our table mates, so we were able to see the dynamic between predator and prey relationships. We used three different groups of colored beans and forks, spoons, and sticks to try to emulate how predator relationships would work in an ecosystem. In addition to this, we shared out findings on the "Homework 8" assignment, which deepened my thinking of the NGSS standards.

2) Are you able to relate what you learned to what you already knew?

In many of my high school classes, I have learned about key concepts we discussed in class, like evolution, natural selection, and predator and prey relationships. I was able to recall some of the information I had learned then when it came time to discussing it today in class.

3) Which parts did you find clear or confusing?

At the beginning of the activity, I was confused how we were being expected to calculate the percentages that were going in the table. Then, it made more sense to me that it was being divided by each group of colored beans and not the total number of beans all together.

  1. Hi Gabby! I would have to agree that I was also confused at the beginning of the activity but I was more unclear of the instructions along with how we were suppose to calculate the percentages. After talking to my group and also starting the activity it made a lot more sense to me as well!

  2. Hi Gabby, I had a lot of fun working with my group to sort the beans and have a hands-on example of seeing Darwin's evolution theory. I am glad it really clicked for you! Sounds like you had a lot of fun this week.

  3. Hi Gabby! I agree that it was confusing determining how to calculate the percentages for the table during the bean activity. After asking for further clarification from Dr. You I also understood that it was being divided by each colored bean.
